Wines
When I am asked what my wines are like and how they should taste, I always have the following running through my head:
Katharina Gessl wines should reflect the relief of seeing familiar faces at an event, the joy of solving a brain-teasing puzzle and learning something new. In Austria that would be the euphoria of a traditional gstanzl sung by a local choir in a heurige tavern after the third glass of wine at sunset…the “mhhhhm” at the first bite of bread and butter…a midnight dance alone at home… the tingling sensation of a message from your beloved…the feeling of happiness when the first refreshing sip of wine dances across your tongue.
They are light on their feet but always strong in character, so that you want to spend an entire evening with them, enthralled and then want to meet up with them again! Somehow like that. That's how my wines should be, that's how they turned out for me – I hope for you too.

What is Katharina like herself?
‘Balanced’ sums it up best – not shy, but down-to-earth gschamig, noone dares to compliment her (which is why she could not write this bit of the text herself). Unless it is deserved, then she rewards you with a broad grin.
Enthusiastic, interested and always motivated, but rather impatient when it comes to arrogance or long-established processes, which is why exact rules are observed rather creatively in the house of Gessl. For her, tradition is to be treated with caution, modernity too.
And so, she only does what she thinks is right after a long ping-pong of thoughts, many opened bottles of wine and chats with fellow winemakers. A kind of potpourri of ideas and philosophy, a new bridge between classic and modern. An ode to her origins and all her teachers, an expression of herself. Gut feeling is the be-all and end-all, the origin of every decision.

Nur ned hudln (take your time)
In this small corner in the northeast of Austria, the continental climate and organic vineyards allow for the production of pleasantly balanced wines. The wines are crafted based on gut feeling with a lot of patience, affection and dedication. Quality through passion. A matter of the heart, made by hand. Wines from person to person.
